Lexilogos is a comprehensive set of resources for the study of the languages of the world.
Lexilogos comes from the Greek λεξίλογος: it's the website that collects words. Lexilogy is to words what anthology is to poems. This noun derives from the Greek ἄνθος (flower) and originally referred to someone who collects flowers, similar to the Latin florilège (anthology doesn't mean science of flowers!).
A lexilogy, is a collection of selected words (lexilogie in French, Lexilogie in German, lessilogia in Italian, lexilogía in Spanish). These terms are neologisms, used exclusively on this website!
Conversely, lexicology is a term found in modern dictionaries (but not in Ancient Greek!): it's the science of studying the lexicon. Words of Greek origin with the suffix -logy usually denote a science.
In Modern Greek, λεξιλόγιο means lexicon.
Let's enrich our vocabulary by exploring languages from our regions, the past, and other cultures!
I have a deep love for words and a passion for exploring dictionaries. I began by creating pages filled with links to online dictionaries and other intriguing discoveries I found on the internet. Additionally, I have a fondness for maps.
These pages became a convenient and practical tool for reference, and I eventually decided to share them. Thus, Lexilogos was born! Initially in French, and now with some pages available in English.
If you find any errors or stylistic awkwardness, please let me know so that I can correct them.
"Dictionaries are treasures that enrich those who consult them."
It's called Papagai, the Provençal word for parrot.
From the same origin, we get papegeai in Old French, Papagei in German, papagaio in Portuguese, pappagallo in Italian.
Papagai is the Lexilogos mascot. Mimicking a parrot is the best way to learn new words and to store them on the hard drive of our brain, whose memory is too often limited…
This website is anchored in a calanque (a narrow inlet with steep limestone walls) in Provence, Southern France. It's located in Marseille, a city founded by the Greeks in the -6th century, originally named Μασσαλία (Massalia).
