Maldivian is the language of the Maldivian Islands, spoken by over 200,000 Maldivians. It is an Indo-European language, related to Sinhala.
There are several dialects. It's also spoken in the Minicoy atoll (Maliku in Dhiveli), south of the Laccadive Islands, which form a territory of India; Malayalam is spoken in the other islands of the archipelago.
The Maldivian thāna script is inspired by Arabic (particularly oriental numerals). It is also read from right to left.
